Re: Let's Talk about Legs!

I'm fairly certain that kind of thing was the whole point of short trousers, judging from the illuminations of stripped farm workers and such. They certainly seem easier to get about in than those long bootie-footed trousers you see from the Iron Age. I wonder if they coexisted at all? Say, one set ...

Re: Some new cooking stuff at MRL

looks like you have some UK options. :) https://www.gdfb.co.uk/pan-with-folding-handle-patera-for-roman-reenactment-1274-p.asp (closer to the Roman original, it looks like) ... and I've a memory the Deepeeka or one of the other mass-market vendors does one, so I'd be surprised if you couldn't find o...

Attested Wales, 3rd century AD
(so pretty much right in line for the "Dunedain as Romano-British" theory)

I stand corrected.

Re: Winter 2017 Now Available!

Awesome! Welcome! I think the rivet question is mostly to quard against the ren-faire biker look. Generally speaking, I think rivets as closures on things like knife sheaths, belts, etc are a 19th century industrial era innovation that look wildly out of place on medieval period gear. I do...

Re: Some new cooking stuff at MRL

To the best of my knowledge that design entered reenacting around the bicentennial - it was shown in one of the various artifact books that were popular around that time. I fear I do not recall the title. Regardless I've heard some of the more hardcore 18th c. folks say they think it likely that it'...

Re: Art thread? Might take some fun small requests if people want.

That is *really* interesting food for thought.

I'd never thought much about Romano-British as a touchstone for Dunedain, but it obviously makes a lot of sense. Thank you!

Re: Some new cooking stuff at MRL

Interesting! some of the designs are pretty. ... the "powdercoat finish" on some of those cauldrons and skillets make me wary though. Maybe it's no worse that what's on modern no-stick cookware, but I'd be nervous actually *cooking* in them without some kind of assurance they wer...

Re: Art thread? Might take some fun small requests if people want.

....iiiinteresting.

The vertical bands on the surcote especially is real food for thought.
(I think that's a Roman thing that descends from purple-striped togas and has connotations of social rank, but I'm not certain about that. Eledwhen might know?)

Hrmmmmm.

Re: Art thread? Might take some fun small requests if people want.

I think given the arm guards found on the Mary Rose: mary-rose-bracer.jpg https://leatherworkingreverend.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/testing/#jp-carousel-384 .... we can safely assume that while professional archers knew the string shouldn't clip the forearm... sometimes things happen. I do t...

Re: Let's Talk about Legs!

Hunh. It just now occurred to me that being a young boy in the late 19th/early 20th c., Tolkien probably grew up in short britches. I can totally imagine that some of his subconscious mental image of the dress of the Shire was shaped by running the dirt lanes of the English countryside in something ...

Re: Starting to Assemble a Dwarven Toolkit

The level of technology in a toolkit is an interesting question - I recall once seeing an archaeological picture of I think a Roman hammer and it looked staggeringly like a modern tool. Given the Dwarven reputation for fine worksmanship, I'd think lots of handtools from the late 18th-early 19th cent...

Re: Dwarven sketch, based on tolkiens own ones.

Those are awesome! I really like the direction you're going - I think you're getting quite close to the Professor's mental image there. The plaque belt especially is interesting. I've been looking at metallic belt plaques for other things recently, and I can easily see something like this in a dwarv...
