Re: 3rd Age Arming Sword Scabbard

Very nice! The anchor points are almost similar to the way Tod of Tods Stuff does a lot of his longsword suspensions. I think that may be the first time I’ve seen a pic of you wearing your piece. I almost fancy that loop would make a great place to slide a pipe.

Re: First Trek of Fall, '18

Helps push me out my own door? This made me want to sprint out of it. We enjoyed the same weather over here to the West of you. My weekend begins after tomorrow and you can bet I’ll be out soaking up the magic that is fall weather. No bow? Preserve rules I presume? Also did you make a bigger snapsac...

New-Old items on KOA

Anybody looking for some good ranger blades on a budget for either a first time buy or a project piece head over to Kult of Athena’s new item page. They currently have a retired Arbedo sword and coustille short sword available for a decent price. The Arbedo is one of Windlass’s better offerings from...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Thank you gentlemen. :) Ursus - happy to! Since I'm by no means an expert at actually using swords though: can you talk some about what hilt features are important from the standpoint of realistic use and woodland carry? For example, is it meaningful that the guard in those examples is a relatively...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Out of curiosity, what do you guys think of this general concept as a default book-lore "rangery" blade? Imagine an Albion blade (Yeoman) with a brazil nut pommel (Reeve) and plain norse-ish (Jarl) guard. Possibly etched or engraved Numenorean-ish art? merf-albion-ranger.jpg I like it a l...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Great drawing to illustrate Ursus! Yes, the bedroll version does seem convenient. At your size you're certainly closer to Aragorn's size and yes, you know well that we can adapt some of the old manuscript training drawings due to larger size. We might be a little slower but we've got the reach! As ...

That’s a lovely piece. You’re a lucky owner! Have you gotten to do much cutting with it?

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

I'd always taken the "used with a shield" and "concealed under his cloak" references as fairly solid evidence Narsil was one-handed, but that's some new information to chew on. (even laying aside your obvious experience using that beast of a sword with a shield) Hrmm.... For tho...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Regardless of how you approach the term "Great", there is no assumption to be made regarding whether or not Aragorn used the sword one- or two-handed at Helm's deep: he acquired a shield from the armoury there. It will always be a solid indication though I've often wondered if it was stri...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Now being Dunedain, Aragorn was tall - "Aragorn, direct descendant of Elendil and his son Isildur, both of whom had been seven feet tall, must nonetheless have been a very tall man ..., probably at least 6 ft. 6; and Boromir, of high Numenorean lineage, not much shorter (say 6 ft. 4)." [T...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Udwin has a fairly compelling source implying Merry's blade is bronze rather than steel it's so old. ... but it's far younger than Narsil. And now Boromir's contemporary blade is "in fashion like" one forged back in the first age. There's a couple ways to reconcile all those, but none of ...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Those are solid points Taurinor and despite my preference I do support arming swords as being the best visual for the common man in terms of swords in Middle Earth. But to keep myself getting burned out at times I always have to remind myself that the Dunedain, while common and drab at first glance,...

Re: New guy, first post... What do you look for in a Ranger sword?

Always a fun question. One swordsmans opinion but to me you carry what you prefer to fight with and are skilled in the use of. As to source material Tolkien specifically says numerous times in all of his works phrases like "long sword" and "great hilt" so the reference is plainly...

Re: A Dúnedain Ranger's belt pouch

This is just awesome. The belt pouch is a piece of kit I’ve been chasing for ages and this is a real visual inspiration. I think the rustic look fits perfectly. I imagine most rangers gear would be very “rustic” without being Hollywood bad, know what I mean? All these wonderful projects you’ve been ...

Got mine yesterday. I’m on vacation for a week staring yesterday, needless to say I already finished it. I’ll wait a bit before posting my thoughts and give others time to read it.
