Re: Dwarven Bounder?

Iodo, I think it just depends on how you prefer to describe things, if that makes sense. For example, when we hear the voice of Tolkien's characters, we are hearing them translated from the languages they were speaking in their world, into the language we understand. So, when Tolkien as the translat...

Re: Dwarven Bounder?

I agree with Peter, Tolkien mentions bounders at the beginning of the Fellowship, in "The shadow of the past", during a conversation at The Green Dragon at Bywater. My impression is that bounders are a kind of hobbit border patrol group. At least they turn away people (or other creatures) ...

Conducting reconnaissance; a multiple part post.

Greetings all, I've been thinking about what I could share with the forum that might not have already been thoroughly discussed, and have settled here. I didn't want to just launch into a sort of class on how to conduct reconnaissance without examining what the forum had in it's collective memory re...

Re: concerning cloaks...

Roac, I can speak to the poncho/woobie thought a bit. I spent many years with those pieces of gear constantly in my rucksack, and outside of basic training never used my poncho as a piece of wet-weather gear (because it sucked, I always ended up wet anyway, so might as well not be all flippety-flapp...

Re: Ranger oaths and other items of interest

Here is the oath of Fëanor, from "Morgoth's Ring". This might also provide a fine base for other oaths. “Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean Brood of Morgoth or bright Vala, Elda or Maia or aftercomer, Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth, Neither law, nor love, nor league of swords, Drea...

Re: 3rd Age longsword scabbard

You could put a really beautiful cap on the butt of that knife without too much trouble, but how useful it might be even for crushing nuts or used as an improvised pestle would depend on how you secure it and what kind of shape you put to it. Depending on how you attach it, you might need to shorten...

Re: Current thoughts on "Ranger" boots?

I've had over the knee cavalier boots that had really pointy toes, and I used to fence in them and such. I can tell you that I agree completely with your decision to move away from pointy toes...not easy to run in for sure. Those boots had a spine up the back (kind of like the ones in the photo), an...

I agree...looks great, and keeps the weapon secure. Win/win!

Re: An Adventure in Dwarven Summer Kit – Pic Heavy

Your geo-cache clue looks to be a short walk south from the Barns at Alderlee. Looks like a beautiful area to tramp around in!

Looks like you had a great time, I'm very inspired to get out and do a bit of rambling myself. Thank you!

Very respectfully,

Re: Ranger patrol tactics

Elleth, Thank you for posting the Michael Martinez article links, that opened a resource to me that I was not previously aware of. (Bow) I have a sneaking suspicion that Tolkien's ideas about how sparse the Dúnedain population in the North was involved several different factors. First the Dúnedain f...

Re: Ranger patrol tactics

Kortoso, While arrows are quiet, people (and other creatures) more often than not don't die quietly. I'm afraid that Tolkien would have known that all too well. At least, that was where my mind went regarding what Haldir was referring to, I could very well be missing the mark. However, when a Galadr...

Re: Ranger patrol tactics

Kortoso, I was giving Elleth's idea some thought. To only be able to gather thirty men for a mission of that importance implies it seems either an extremely sparse population, or very heavy commitments elsewhere I realized that I was thinking at the problem in a myopic and self-oriented way. And tha...

Re: Ranger patrol tactics

Elleth, I think that regarding the Grey Company, or any of the Rangers in the North, the analogy of a colonial muster is way closer to their organization than that of the military unit of the Rangers in Ithilien. Even then, it's a bit on the iffy side in my opinion. The way that Tolkien writes of th...

Re: Ranger patrol tactics

My apologies for waking a long sleeping post, I hope that you will forgive me for any incivility. I feel that I can competently shed some light on relatively current US Army doctrine regarding recon/patrolling tactics, techniques, and procedures. I served (got out in March 2015) as a RSTA Cavalry Sc...
