Re: Any plans?

This weekend would have been our biggest living history event of the year but like everything else it got cancelled this time. So next weekend Heimir are meeting up to spend a day crafting followed by some particularly large steaks cooked over coals and washed down with bright helpings of mead. Hope...

Re: Beekeeping

I've done beekeeping for years, though hive dieoffs followed by too much work mean I don't have any currently. I've done Langstroth and top-bar styles, and I'm thinking about doing a hybrid system if I restart my apiary--a long, flat hive that takes Langstrogh frames. Top bar frames are just too de...

Re: How to dress an Elf?

I have been giving this one some thought and the only garment that is consistent is the hooded cloak. Glorfindel wears one as do the Galadhrim and they furnish the fellowship with similar garments so there's one thing. While it depicts male clothing there is Tolkien's own illustration of Beleg findi...

Beorning Honey Cakes

So I have recently been doing a bit of baking and experimenting with honey and I have come up with what I think is a fairly solid representation of the Beorning honey cake. I have kept it as simple as possible and where possible tried to keep to period ingredients although there are some I have used...

Re: Beekeeping

I'd be interested seeing the traditional method of beekeeping if you have it still. Excited to see more of your apiary adventures! Here is the oldest video I have, it's from 1925 and the guys are using dog carts to carry the skeps around and pipes to smoke the bees. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?...

Re: Beekeeping

Thank you! The Beorning in me loves to see apiary in action! I thought that you might. When I read the section of the hobbit where they arrive at Beorns bee pastures I'm always transported to great beds of sweet smelling flowers and the loud hum coming from all around. I'm sure that as soon as you ...

Do you ever sleep man? I haven't even had a chance to post on your boots yet and here you are with another finished project.

This is really nice, simple, well executed and like all your gear it looks completely servicable.

Re: What do we know of Eating Forks in Middle Earth?

For what it's worth, I found that reference to Anglo-Saxon eating forks again. It's in Pollington's The Mead-Hall: The Feasting Tradition in Anglo-Saxon England : The line drawing is rough, but the faces and knotting do suggests an Anglo-Saxon art style and hence domestic manufacture. And less than...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

I will never cease to be envious of the countryside and forests you get to explore Iodo. Wow. What a great lonely, forsaken feel. But what brought those trees down do you suppose?Trolls? There was a particularly clever troll (which isn't saying much) known as The Scourge of the Eryn Vorn. The tale g...

Beekeeping

Any other beekeepers on the forums? Any interest in apiary? Here is a bit of a write up this weekends harvest, it's pic heavy and has some bee terms in there so if you need anything elaborated on then let me know. Last weekend Heimir, another friend and I robbed my beehive, it was the first harvest ...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

I have found another recipe that I am going to try in "Simple Foods For The Pack", put out by The Sierra Club. It's for ANZAC biscuits, said to have been fresh when delivered to troops in WW1 after an 8 week boat ride. 1C whole wheat flour 1C unsweetened coconut 1C brown sugar 1C rolled o...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

Great to see all you folks out and thanks for sharing the pictures. I've said it before, I'm extremely jealous of those of you who get the classic seasons. Autumn leaves and snow are virtually non existent here. We're starting to warm up already in Australia but this year we plan to swap our boots f...

The yellow one 5 could be Goldenrod but honestly they all look a bit weird to me.

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

Being a baker by trade I tend to think of the lembas and it's magical properties as something more akin to a modern protein bar.

I have recently been experimenting with Beorning honey cakes though and am planning on documenting my next one as I think I have the recipe down.
