If you want a single piece rivet that will work well take a short/thick flat headed nails. Cut them down to about 1/2" to 3/4" depending on what the thickness of the material you're riveting. Then using a fine hack saw cut them down the center vertically from the non head end. Leave approx...

I do remember seeing a picture of a Roman folding frying pan. I don't have a pic so I can't say if it's similar or not.

You don't really need a leather strop. Just use the inside of your belt. You can hang your belt by it's buckle and just use the inside (rough side closest to your body). Very nice so far, can't wait to see it completed !! What do you plan on doing for the scabbard. Maybe the scabbard would give you a bigger canvas for the line art picture than the pommel.
