Re: The cult of Narsil
I came across an issue of a (seemingly quite well researched!) Middle-earth role-playing 'zine from about a decade ago that has an article about weapons and armor in Middle-earth, which includes a quote attributed to The History of Middle-earth, Vol. 8: The War of the Ring: Part Three: III, Minas Ti...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures
Glaenry made a trip down to my neck of the woods today for what I thought was a very pleasant jaunt around a local park I enjoy! https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/87160171_10163030509445427_2528469082768932864_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ohc=5GzYiMyJtCUAX8qC_k-&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.x...

Re: Dúnedain Hats?
I recently started a discussion over on the Facebook group about this, but I’m afraid I was a little unclear, so I figured I’d try again on here. Also, I feel like the conversation on the forums veers a bit more academic, which is the direction I’m really looking for this topic anyway. I was ...

Re: Interesting Trekking Boots
The only thing to be mindful of with Bohemond’s off-the-rack shoes is that they tend to be narrow. If you have wide feet, Viking Leathercrafts might be a safer bet.

Re: Winter in Wilderland
That looks like an excellent outing, and the video is very well done! Was the hut something that was constructed on another outing? Did you keep a fire going in the hut most of the night? That windchill was serious business! That's an excellent "period" to set a trek during, especially one...

Re: Interesting Trekking Boots
They're handsome boots, but they look (to my eye) to be a modern boot dressed up as something sort-of historic looking, and my goodness are they expensive! If you like the look of toggle boots, you could get something similar of a more historic construction from Boots by Bohemond or Viking Leathercr...

Re: Which tunic?
It looks like a solidly built piece of gear, and looks quite nice with the rest of your kit, Rob! That said, I don’t know that it’s where I would start. Personally, I think you might be better served getting some linen and wool, getting out in the woods in it, and then evaluating if you think a ...

Re: Water Canteen
Wow, that looks great! One of these is on my list; I have a large barrel-shaped costrel, but I think a flacket would serve me better on shorter jaunts. The bottle itself is completely water tight, holding just over a liter of water however it will slowly leak out the sides of the stopper at the seam...

Re: My kit as of now
The oilcloth is treated with a 50:50 mixture of linseed oil and white spirits, I haven't measured it but at a guess I'd say it's around 2x1.5 meters which isn't really ideal as it's not wide enough to fold under myself as a shelter/groundcloth combo so as of now, it's one or the other. I also still...

I'll echo what everyone else has said - wow! Making your own footwear is no easy thing to tackle! I don't think I would have even noticed the additional panel if you hadn't pointed it out; it fits the look of the shoe very well. I don't know that I've seen turnshoes with a seam along the top before ...

Re: My kit as of now
Wow, that looks great, especially for a first pass! At the moment, the roll itself is just made up of my blanket and an oilcloth I recently made. The bag just contains a copper pot I cobbled together out of various items from the local recycling center and stuffing. I'd love to hear more about your ...

Re: Looking to have my kit critiqued part 2
I like the idea of a crockery cookpot, especially for a "non professional woodsrunner" persona. I'm just petrified of cracking the darn thing in the fire. How forgiving have you found them? I haven't blown mine up yet (knock on wood), which means they can't be TOO hard to use! The big thi...
Re: New Belt!
I saw your pictures on Facebook, but I just want to say again how lovely I think this is! Some of the little touches just blow my mind, like the slightly extended star at the end of the strap and the fact that the holes for the buckle tongue are centered on some of the stars. And like I said on Face...

Re: Looking to have my kit critiqued part 2
It looks like you’ve put some thought into this, and you seem to have most of the basics covered or plan to get them covered! I’m glad you’re looking to get a fire kit – flint and steel is one of the first hard kit items that I recommend folks acquire. Have you thought about whether you’ll...

Re: Revisting Bree
I''d suggest the estimate of 300 villagers to be way on the low side. With children and elders in the mix, we're probably talking closer to 600. Couple that with the surrounding farmers, helpers and their families plus wood cutters for the town we're talking a bustling community. There are also the...
