Aether-pistols at dawn? I expect more from you Manv. You should have demanded giant Steam-driven Spiders or an Air Kraken duel.

Re: New version of my original Dunedain Star turtle brooch

Yes, switching to green sand has allowed me to clear my last hurdle for medieval and LOTR brooches: historically accurate pins.

I'm very close to having several variations available.

Re: New version of my original Dunedain Star turtle brooch

That is AMAZING - am I seeing it right that it's in two metals? Or is that an artifact of the cleanup process? The piece is pewter, and the bottom layer is copper plated. I use roman vitriol (Copper Sulfate) to deposit plate copper onto the pewter. It's been used since the 9th century, usually as a...

Re: Boot Treads

This was a recent Facebook post from Ana Period Shoes : ABOUT KNOTTED SOLES: AUTHENTIC PROFILE SOLES FOR MEDIEVAL FIGHTERS' SHOES I have been experimenting with knotted soles for two years now, and the results from the field-testing have come in. IT WORKS! I was worried that the cords would get ripp...

New version of my original Dunedain Star turtle brooch

Started a new type of casting (green sand) today, and made this version of my original Dunedain Star Turtle Brooch.

I think that with a little care I can make this work really well.

Re: Hey pirate reenactors, gotta question...

"so I turned rings from aluminium..." I will never think I'm clever or resourceful again after hearing that. Srs though - cool! I know, kids these days. Just can't keep them out of the shop. My 17 year old is the same way. I quite liked steampunk for about six months in 2005, back when it...

Re: Hey pirate reenactors, gotta question...

Darn, I figured I could find something.

Ah the promise and disappointment of x-punk. A return to handmade craftsmanship and the use of natural materials that devolved into a low-end flooded by drop shipments from sweatshops and all others pretending that it never interested them in the first place.

Illustrated version of Sam's Unpublished Epilogue

This is really beautiful. Nice comic of a unpublished Epilogue framed as a conversation between Sam and his daughter. I shared the first page, but click through, it's good. https://archiveofourown.org/works/27478819/chapters/72409524 ( Here's a link to Tolkien's Original ) https://i.imgur.com/0g3FNU...

Re: Elven spinning

Yes, I would also tend to agree with this, for sure. I mostly meant that I sometimes find it hard to imagine elves doing those sorts of jobs, more than any of those necessarily being their primary profession. I don't know, seems like Elven society is stratified, at least among the Elves of Mirkwood...

Re: Numenorean design motifs

Yup, that's exactly it. Do you have any thoughts? I'd be happy to contribute digital files of dwarven designs I have used in my kit, and any other things from other ME cultures that I've used in gifts for people etc... although I admit I'm not sure why we are voting on designs? I probably missed so...

Re: Numenorean design motifs

Ok, there were:

a: 3 votes
b: 5 votes
c: 2 votes

So I'm going to do B. Any thoughts on formats & metadata? By meta-data I mean the cultural and temporal stuff. What culture is it from, what time period, most like uses, etc.

Re: Numenorean design motifs

Forgive me if I have the wrong idea after quickly reading this discussion, is the idea here to create an archive of usable Dunedain cultural motifs as digital files, maybe on the wiki? if so, could we include different category's of stuff from other cultures/places etc and set it up as a library th...

Re: Elven spinning

I oiled this one with lanolin, I'm not sure if beeswax would have an effect or not, might be worth a try tho Don't take any recommendation I make here as anything more than speculation. I know very little about spinning. I should make a pole lathe this year tbh (for many reasons!), this one I hand ...

Re: Elven spinning

Ok, so what would an elven drop spindle look like? Well, mechanically very similar. I expect the elven lady goes into the woods, thanks a tree for it's branch. Gently pinches it at the point she wishes it come off, pulls the bark off like we might strip the leaves off a willow withe, grabs a pebble ...
